Listed Pitchers: Wells / Contreras
Reds: Wells has made three starts for Cincinnati and the Reds have won them all. After two no-decisions, he got his first win in the Majors as a starter since 2007 by beating Atlanta on Saturday. He allowed just one hit over six innings, although he struggled at times with his control. Wells walked four and hit a batter. He made 97 pitchers, with 46 of them balls and 51 strikes. Wells has allowed just three hits over 11 innings in his past two starts, walking eight. He began the 2008 season with Colorado before going on the DL with a blood clot and then being released in August.
Rockies: Contreras is with a new team in a new league, but his success rate is easy to figure. When Contreras commands his fastball and gets ahead in the count, he’s capable of nights like Saturday, when he won his Rockies debut by holding the D-backs to one run on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. When he doesn’t get early strikes, performances like those that led to a 5-13 record and 5.42 ERA with the White Sox can happen. Contreras believes a bullpen session with Rockies pitching coach Bob Apodaca before his debut start with the club might have unlocked some success.

Listed Pitchers: Baker / Cecil
Twins: Baker pitched well once again Saturday in a win over the Indians. The right-hander has been the Twins’ best pitcher over the past two months, having not lost a game in his past 11 starts, which includes four no-decisions. Baker has been particularly tough against the Indians this season, and it was no different Saturday. He pitched six innings, allowing just one run on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts despite not having his best stuff. The right-hander will try to continue his winning ways on Thursday against the Blue Jays.
Blue Jays: This is scheduled to be Cecil’s final start of the season as the organizations wants to keep the rookie’s innings pitched under control. After going 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Yankees on Sept. 5, he has 136 1/3 innings between Toronto and Triple-A Las Vegas. He pitched 118 2/3 innings last season at three different minor-league levels. He hasn’t pitched over five innings in his past five starts. He is 2-4, 6.98 ERA, in eighth starts against AL East teams and 4-0, 4.22 ERA, in eight starts against other teams. He had trouble keeping the ball down in his loss to New York and gave up seven hits, three runs, three walks and struck out four. He is seeking consistency with his delivery that would allow him to keep the ball down and when he does that he has good sink and his changeup is effective.
