Listed Pitchers: Lehr / Harden
Reds: After missing a turn in the rotation with a strained groin, Lehr made it through his Wednesday side bullpen session with no issues and was named Friday’s starter. The injury was sustained during his previous start on Sept. 1 vs. Pirates. Despite feeling the strain on his second pitch of the game, Lehr gutted it out for 114 pitches in the game. He worked six innings and gave up four earned runs, six hits and five walks with two strikeouts during an 11-5 win over the Pirates.
Cubs: Harden was effective in his five innings against the Mets on Saturday, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out 10. A high pitch count, however, prevented him from going further into the game. Harden is 4-1 with a 2.67 ERA in five career starts against the Reds. This is the fourth time this season Harden will face Cincinnati. He won his first two starts against the Reds before dropping an Aug. 5 decision, 4-0. In that game, Harden allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings. The current Reds roster can’t speak to much success against Harden, as it is just 4-for-43 lifetime against the right-hander. Joey Votto and Scott Rolen each have home runs against Harden.

Listed Pitchers: Shields / Lester
Rays: Shields was given an early lead for the second straight start on Saturday, but the bullpen wasn’t able to hold on against Detroit. Shields was charged with six runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. A two-run home run he gave up to Alex Avila in the seventh inning was the crucial blow, cutting Tampa Bay’s lead to 6-5. Shields said he felt he had good command but made a mistake to Avila which cost him. He has not won at home since June 4. Since then, he’s 4-1 with a 4.76 ERA on the road. He has yet to pitch at the new Yankee Stadium, and was 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA in five starts at the old Stadium.
Red Sox: The lefty has been utterly dominant for more than three months. In an 18-start run that began on May 31, Lester is 9-2 with a 2.25 ERA. He has given up one earned run or less 10 times over that span. In his last start, he became the 10th pitcher in Sox history to notch 200 strikeouts in a season. In that win over the White Sox, Lester fired seven shutout innings, walking two and striking out eight. Lester is 21-5 lifetime at Fenway. He is 5-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 11 career starts against Tampa Bay.
