Listed Pitchers: Berken / Byrd
Orioles: Berken has worked to a 2-0 record with a 2.81 ERA in his last three starts, a span that corresponds directly to his usage of a two-seam fastball. The right-hander has begun to get the ball down more in the last three starts and has allowed just one home run. By contrast, Berken had allowed six home runs and 11 earned runs in his last three starts employing the four-seam fastball.
Red Sox: The right-hander has gone from one extreme to the other in his first two starts since rejoining the Red Sox. After throwing six shutout innings in a win over the Blue Jays, Byrd was rocked by the White Sox, giving up 10 hits and seven runs over 2 1/3 innings. In eight career starts against the Orioles, Byrd is 4-2 with a 4.30 ERA. He is 5-3 with a 4.55 ERA in 10 starts at Fenway Park.

Listed Pitchers: Pavano / Halladay
Twins: Pavano pitched well, but errors ultimately spoiled his return to Cleveland as the Twins lost to the Indians on Friday. Facing his former team for the first time, Pavano kept Minnesota in the game despite not having his best stuff. But after errors led to runs in the third and sixth innings, Pavano left with a two-run deficit. In all, Pavano pitched six innings, giving up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out six and walking two. He will try to regroup against the Blue Jays, against whom he is 2-4 with a 6.41 ERA in eight career starts.
Blue Jays: After losing three successive starts for only the third time in his career, Halladay was brilliant against the Yankees, pitching his second career one-hitter in a 6-0 win. It was his second shutout of the season and his sixth complete game. He regained the feel of his curveball in the last few innings of his Aug. 30 loss in Boston and was able to carry over that pitch effectively into the Yankees start. His changeup also was better and Doc’s sinker and cutter need no introduction. The only hit was a clean double on an 0-1 curve to Ramiro Pena with one out in the sixth. He beat the Twins at the Metrodome, April 16, allowing eight hits but no walks and one run while striking out eight in seven innings. He is 8-0 with a 2.77 ERA in his career against the Twins.

Listed Pitchers: LeBlanc / Zito
Padres: In his best career outing to date, LeBlanc held the Dodgers to two hits over six scoreless innings in his last start against the Dodgers on Sept. 4. The left-hander, who gets a lot of mileage out of his changeup, showed much better command than he did in his first two starts earlier this season when he allowed seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two against the Dodgers and while giving up several hard-hit balls that were turned into outs, pitched well.
Giants: Zito settled down after the Brewers scored two runs, stole three bases and pounded three long fly balls just foul in the first inning, but he was replaced after throwing 96 pitches through four frames. Largely responsible for his departure was his count of five walks, something that has plagued the left-hander on two recent occasions. He allowed six walks on Aug. 24 at Colorado — and six walks in his other five August starts combined.
