PGA Tour Season Comes To An End With Tour Championship

by WagerWeb Staff Writers

The 2013-14 PGA Tour season officially comes to a close with the conclusion of the FedEx Cup playoffs, where the winner gets a cool $10 million prize, at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta from Sept. 11-14. There is still the Ryder Cup on the Tour schedule but that’s not an official event so the next Tour event that counts will be in early October and that’s for the 2014-15 wraparound season.

Rory McIlroy is the WagerWeb favorite to win his first Tour Championship, and should he accomplish that McIlroy likely would add the FedEx Cup title to his British Open and PGA Championship major titles this season. He’s a lock to win PGA Tour Player of the Year no matter what happens at the Tour Championship.

The Tour Championship has just a 30-man field with no cut — the playoffs started with 125 players. Heading to East Lake, the points standings are reset to give every player a mathematical shot at winning the FedEx Cup. Only the top five in points control their own destiny. If any of the top five wins the Tour Championship, then he wins the FedExCup. Everyone else needs help. The last two FedEx Cup winners started the Tour Championship inside the top five — Brandt Snedeker was No. 5 in 2012 and Henrik Stenson was No. 2 last year. In fact, no eventual FedEx Cup winner started the playoffs outside the Top 20 in points. Stenson started this year’s playoffs at No. 70.

Last year Stenson closed with a 2-under 68 on Sunday to win the Tour Championship by three shots over Jordan Spieth and Steve Stricker. Stenson didn’t shot a single round in the 70s. McIlroy didn’t qualify for the 2013 Tour Championship, which seems laughable now. He was in the points lead entering the 2012 Tour Championship but finished tied for 10th, with Snedeker winning.

The best American hope to win this tournament and the FedEx Cup likely will be Jim Furyk, who has finished runner-up three times on Tour this year after blowing 54-hole leads. He generally plays well at East Lake and won the tournament and the FedEx Cup in 2010. That was his last victory on Tour. Furyk was T14 at the 2013 Tour Championship. Americans have won the FedEx Cup in five of its seven years and have won the Tour Championship also five times in the past seven seasons.
