NFL BETTING: Eagles and 49ers Matchup Includes Week 4 Special Props
Bovada Staff : September 26, 2014
Only one Sunday game in Week 4 will feature some of last year’s playoff contenders, and that’s Philadelphia at San Francisco. Those two could certainly face off again in the postseason, but the Niners will have to win here in order for that to be a possibility. They are 4.5-point favorites at Bovada with a total of 51. The game will have live betting at the book.

Not that you want to lose any game, but Philadelphia can afford to lose Sunday’s match more than San Francisco. The Eagles are one of three undefeated teams along with Arizona and Cincinnati. Has Philly been lucky or good? In Week 1, the Eagles fell behind an awful Jacksonville team 17-0 at the half, only to outscore the Jaguars 34-0 in the second half.
In Week 2, Philadelphia trailed the Colts 20-6 late in the third quarter in Indianapolis; the Eagles went on to win 30-27 on a 36-yard Cody Parkey field goal with no time left. Last Sunday, the Eagles trailed the Washington Redskins 17-7 in the second quarter but won 37-34. Philly is the first team to rally from double-digit deficits to win its first three games in NFL history. Could it happen again this week? That’s a yes-only Week 4 special at Bovada (+1800).
Eagles quarterback Nick Foles could be the early
NFL MVP favorite. He has thrown for at least 322 yards in every game and leads the NFL with 978 yards passing. Philadelphia led the NFL in rushing last year, but that has been a struggle as the Eagles are 19th in rushing yards. LeSean McCoy, who set a franchise record for yards in winning the 2013 rushing crown, has only 175 yards on 60 carries.
Part of McCoy’s struggles could be the result of a banged-up offensive line. Three starters are out this week: center Jason Kelce, left guard Evan Mathis and right tackle Lane Johnson. The first two are injured, and the latter is serving the final game of a suspension.
San Francisco looked good when it opened with a 28-17 win in Dallas, but it blew big leads in a Week 2 loss at home to Chicago and Week 3 at Arizona. The 49ers have struggled in the second half of games so far. They have been outscored 52-3 after intermission, and that’s generally a coaching issue. There is a second-half point spread special for this game, with the Eagles getting 2.5 points.
The Niners’ struggles and continued mistakes (penalties, turnovers) have put some heat on Coach Jim Harbaugh, who has been rumored for the Michigan job. Harbaugh is 10/1 for the first NFL coach to be fired prop. The thought of the team firing Harbaugh before the season was laughable as the Niners were a Super Bowl favorite.
Perhaps San Francisco will get back to its roots this week, and that’s running the ball. No. 1 tailback Frank Gore had one of the worst games of his career last week with six carries for 10 yards. Gore wasn’t hurt, the team just got away from him. Gore has totals this week of over/under 14.5 carries and 57.5 yards, with all options at -115.
Philadelphia has replaced San Francisco as the second-favorite to win the NFC behind Seattle. The Eagles are now 13/2 and the 49ers are 8/1. Philly is also the biggest NFC division favorite at -250 to win the east. The 49ers are +350 to take the NFC West.
